The parish of Vila Caiz is 12 km southwest of the county seat.

"Caiz" comes from the Arabic "cafiz", a measure of grains or solids used in the past. Payments to the landlord were made in cafizes or cafizes.

It was a town, couto and an honour pretending to the former municipality of Santa Cruz de Riba Tâmega. The municipality of Santa Cruz was made up of the parishes of Toutosa, Constance, Carvalhosa, Banho, Vila Caiz, Passinhos, Fregim, Louredo, Travanca, Mancelos, Oliveira, Real, Ataíde, Recezinhos and Figueiró, under the charter of 1513 of D. Manuel.

King José I, by provision of July 1, 1776, detached the municipality, as well as those of Unhão, Gestaçô Gouveia and Canaveses, from the district of Guimarães to that of Penafiel. The municipality of Santa Cruz became an independent district and was extinguished in October 1855, when Vila Caiz passed to Amarante, as happened most of the parishes. At that time Caíde moved to Lousada and Recezinhos to Penafiel. A small part went to Marco de Canaveses.

Vila Caiz, until 1855 had a town hall, jail, pillory, captain-general and the authorities of the old municipality.

The "honor" of Vila Caiz belonged to the donees of the parish of Unhão, in the municipality of Felgueiras.

In the place of Castelo Velho there was a Lusitanian fort, linked to numerous legends, such as the boulder of the Moorish tree, the boulder of the window, the boulder of the goat and the curious boulder of the cave, to which an inhabitant placed a door, serving as a warehouse for farming materials and which the people called the "butcher shop of the Moors".

In the place of Vilarinho, a Lusitanian-Roman necropolis was mentioned, discovered in 1908 and destroyed in 1909, when the Tâmega railway line crossed it.

About this parish José Augusto Vieira says in "O Minho Pitoresco" (1886): "The parish church is a regular and well-treated temple, and its construction dates back to the 18th century. In the village of Coura there is also a chapel dedicated to St. Peter and bordering the county with that of Marco rises on a showy pinnacle the chapel of Our Lady of Grace, a sanctuary whose origin is unknown, it is only known that it had hermits in distant times but did not have them, however, in 1721 because the archbishops of Braga did not allow it. In that year, says the "Marian Sanctuary", the church was beautiful and had an elegant galilee. In our times, the chapel fell into abandonment, from which Father António Augusto Pinto de Magalhães came to take it, managing by his efforts to carry out a complete transformation of the old chapel, to the point of making it one of the most beautiful Marian sanctuaries in Minho".
